Book for wine festival before Cyprus hotels fill up
Travellers who are planning to visit the annual Limassol Wine Festival may want to book their Cyprus hotels soon, before they fill up.
The celebration, which takes place from August 28th to September 9th, anticipates a crowd of 100,000 people who, drawn to the country's wine-growing capital, may fill Cyprus hotels.
Popular varieties of Cypriot wine, such as Muscat, Retsina and dessert wine Commanderia, will be available for tasting during the festival.
The Limassol festival, which was established in 1961, is a reinterpretation of celebrations which have been taking place for thousands of years. Originally, the party was held in honour of Dionysus, the Greek god of the vine, and Aphrodite, the love goddess.
Modern-day Limassol celebrates by hosting 15,000 visitors per night at regular performances of comedy, humour and satire - as well as offering wine-tastings, gastronomical feasts and opportunities for song and dance.
Additionally, one particular night at the festival "is an opportunity for every person to live the Greek tradition of the Dionysiac celebrations, when all inhabitants of Attica, citizens or farmers, sat at common banquets, offered free by the state, tasted the new wines and participate in the mass dances, songs, poetry and drama," the official website states.
Cyprus is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean.
